Where
does the chili come from?
Native
Americans were already cooking with chilies before 5000 BC.
Chilies
were used in cooking around 2000 BC by the Incas in South America.
In
the times of Discoveries, Portuguese noticed Native Americans cooking
and really enjoyed the hot and spicy flavour that chili added to
food.
In
the 16th Century, the Portuguese were the major players of spice trade
and took the piri-piri chili to Indonesia, China and Japan.
The
Portuguese aware of its potential to commercialize the chili, then
brought spices including
piri piri chili, from America back to Europe, then to India and to
Africa.
The
piri-piri chili grew very easily in Africa where it became one of the
main sources to supply to Europe around that time due to its climate.
Portuguese
played a great part in distributing the chili all over the world,
credit is to be given to India and Africa for providing the land to
grow it.
However, it is thanks to the knowledge of ancestor
Native Americans that we all enjoy chili recipes today.
The
piri piri chili is used to make the famous Peri Peri sauce.
